Yuma Charter Schools Spotlight on Leadership
Bill Wachunas is enjoying his fifth year as Principal at AmeriSchools Academy. Bill is a long time resident of Yuma who has worked and volunteered in the community exemplifying the AmeriSchools value of Community as Laboratory. His energy and commitment to providing challenging educational opportunities for all students is recognized among the students, staff, parents and the educational community. You will not find Bill sitting behind his desk very often. He is often in classes, working with students, mentoring staff or sponsoring one of the after school recreation clubs. His enthusiasm is contagious as he looks forward to the challenge of improving student achievement and supporting a strong community relationship.
4th Annual Stackers Competition!
Each year students at AmeriSchools compete in friendly competitions. The 4 th Annual Stackers competition tests student’s hand and eye coordination skills which is something we want all students to use and work on. Medals and ribbons are given out to all students that participate and the lesson of trying your hardest and being a good sport is instilled in our students.
Congratulations To Our 6th Level Students!
Each year our highest level, 6 th Level, has a special promotion ceremony where each student gets a chance to speak about their AmeriSchools Experience. Prior to this ceremony the 6 th Level took their end of the year trip to San Diego’s Balboa Park and Sea World…a fun filled 2 days. 6 th Level students enjoy their 2 nd day in San Diego. Day 1 museums at Balboa Park and day 2 Sea World.
Annual Fall Festival & Water Fest
Fall Festival - Each year AmeriSchools has a Fall Festival which gives our students a chance to unwind and have fun. A great AmeriSchools Family event that gets bigger and better each year. Mr. Torres hands out prizes to students who play the games at our Annual Fall Festival. Nice hat Mr. Torres!
Waterfest – Each year the Yuma County puts on the Water Festival to teach students about the importance and value of water to Yuma, and how to conserve water. During a Community Exploration our 4 th Level students learned 1 st hand the importance of water to Yuma and it’s citizens, and how they can become good conserves of water.

Meet Our AmeriSchools Staff!
It is the people who make up a school that make it a special place for children. We would like to introduce you to our instructional team and share something about each of them.
ARIZONA CHARTER SCHOOL ASSOCIATION TEACHER OF THE YEAR FINALIST!

Community Explorations Set a Standard
AmeriSchools Academy at Yuma has provided many opportunities for students to participate in the community. This allows students to learn from everything around them as well as to give back to the community. We are partners in educating our children. Here are some of the very exciting things scheduled this year at our Yuma Charter School:
- Cocopah Indian Tribe
- Renaissance Fair
- Pumpkin Patch
- Food Bank/Habitat for Humanity
- Yuma Territorial Prison
- Yuma Historical Crossing Park
- Betty's Kitchen, a local wildlife area
- Special End of Year Experience for promoting students
AmeriSchools Academy Yuma celebrates its fourth year as a PERFORMING PLUS school based on the Arizona State Department of Education. Our students are learning and achieving at higher rates as compared to other students across Arizona.
AmeriSchools Yuma Enjoys Parent
& Community Support
AmeriSchools welcomes volunteers and parent involvement at our campus. Each year we recognize the volunteers and parents that help make our school so successful.
In addition to our parents, AmeriSchools is very grateful for the support of our community! We received an award of $500 from Kohls last year. Kohls employees also read to our students! We appreciate their support!
All grant money is used to support the academic and enrichment programs at AmeriSchools. This level of community commitment helps AmeriSchools make a difference for students - everyday! Thank you Yuma!
AmeriSchools Yuma News & Events
Hands on - Students learn more by doing than by watching. AmeriSchools addresses the need for hands on learning by providing many opportunities for our students to learn by doing more than just reading and writing about what they have learned or read about. Hands on means hands on!
Science Club - Science Club has been operating for the last 4 years. Students learn about nature, geology, plants, animals, and much more. Then on 1 Saturday each month students have a Community Exploration where they get to learn with hands on activities in real life situations. The club promotes science, friendship, being active, and learning more about Yuma.
Crazyhair – A fun day for students is when we have different themes like Crazy Hair Day or Rock Star Day. This is always enjoyable for the students and staff, but there is a lesson in these fun days. Tolerance and that it is okay to be different. That differences is one of the things that makes our country so great. A great way for students to express themselves will learning about tolerance and differences.
Prizes – Students are rewarded for their hard work and their good attendance at AmeriSchools. At AmeriSchools we want every student to achieve and be successful…so the opportunity to win prizes or other rewards helps build the good character trait within our students.
