Yuma Charter Schools Spotlight on Leadership
Jo Ann Emrick has been a part of the AmeriSchools Yuma team for two years. She has served as a second level teacher, lead teacher and reading specialist before becoming the principal of the Yuma South Campus. A native of Yuma, she has two daughters, Jodi and Jennifer, and four grandchildren, Jeven, Jack, Saye and Jillian. She has served as a Reading First Coach and a Literacy coordinator, both of which provided many opportunities to mentor and coach teachers and to build a foundation that will enable her to take on the role of principal. Jo Ann is dedicated to not only the success of her students, but also to the continuing growth of the staff she works with. She looks forward to guiding her team to making a difference for every child every day.
HANDS ON LEARNING
Part of the the philosophy of AmeriSchools is to look beyond the traditional methods of instruction. Our teachers strive to give our students a wide variety of hands-on activities in our classrooms or even outside the classroom. Students learn best when they can take an active role in the lesson, using movement, music, role-playing and many other forms of leaning.

Teaching the Standards through
Arts and P.E.
Learning happens in the classroom, at the art easel and out on the playground. AmeriSchools knows that children learn in many different settings and that art, music and a healthy body are all important parts of development. In order to make sure students have opportunities to develop all their talents AmeriSchools provides SPECIALS throughout the week.
- P.E. includes stacker competitions, exercising with music, volleyball, and general fitness
- Music includes learning about notes and scales as well as learning songs for schoolwide performances.
- Art is everywhere around us and integrated into all content areas. Hands-on art projects have included ancient Egypt and Native American life as well as seasonal art. Come in and enjoy the beautiful original art your children create.
FAMILY FEAST
Families are extremely important to us at AmeriSchools and we celebrate our families with a Family Feast before Thanksgiving!
Each classroom has a feast and families donate food items to be shared. A great time is had by all! We could not accomplish what we do without the support of our families. Thanks to all of you for your support!

Meet Our AmeriSchools Staff!
It is the people who make up a school that make it a special place for children. We would like to introduce you to our instructional team and share something about each of them.
DICTIONARIES FOR THIRD LEVEL STUDENTS
Thank you to Dr. Richard Geyer and Rotary International for the dictionaries they provided to our third level students! The Rotary gives dictionaries to third graders throughout Yuma Country every year.
COMMUNITY EXPLORATIONS SET A STANDARD
AmeriSchools Academy at Yuma has provided many opportunities for students to participate in the community. This allows students to learn from everything around them as well as to give back to the community. We are partners in educating our children.
Here are some of the community resources we have to explore:
- Cocopah Indian Tribe
- Renaissance Fair
- Humane Society of Yuma
- Food Bank/Habitat for Humanity
- Yuma Territorial Prison
- Yuma Historical Crossing Park
- Arizona Western College /Northern Arizona University
- Nutcracker Ballet
- Ballet de Seuss
- West Wetlands Park
- Saihati Camel Farm
AmeriSchools Academy Yuma celebrates its fourth year as a PERFORMING PLUS school based on the Arizona State Department of Education. Our students are learning and achieving at higher rates as compared to other students across Arizona.
BALLOON FESTIVAL COMES TO AMERISCHOOLS
A team from Balloons Over Yuma made a vist to AmeriSchools South Campus with a remote controlled hot air balloon. Students were treated to a great demonstration of how the balloon flies as well as an up close look at the inner workings of the balloon.
RED RIBBON WEEK
U.S. Customs agents visited our campus during Red Ribbon Week and presented a demonstration on how their dogs are trained to sniff out hidden drugs. Their dog, Taco, was a big hit with the students!
SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY
An important component of being a student at AmeriSchools is learning to give back to our community. AmeriSchools' families filled the back of a pick-up truck with food items for the Salvation Army Holiday Food Drive!
Other community activities we help with are the Pennies for Patients Leukemia Fund Raiser, Jump Rope for Hearts for the American Heart Association and a yard sale to raise funds for the Humane Society of Yuma.
