A Great Beginning Leads to Success
All of our lower elementary grades are now using Superkids, a program exclusively designed for the first three years of school - Kindergarten, 1st Grade and 2nd Grade. Our first year students in the Readiness Class begin every year with meeting the 13 Superkids, a process which introduces the first 13 letters and sounds, builds vocabulary and writing skills. In the second half of the year they are writing sentencess and reading stories, providing a great foundation for future success. At the Foundations 1 level (year 2 of the program) the students learn new vocabulary, how to decode new words, reading for comprehension and continue expanding their writing and spelling skills.
In the last year of Superkids, at the Foundations 2 level, the students continue with rigor, learning how to read fluently and with comprehension skills which will carry them into the next levels of learning. The reading expands into nonfiction through the monthly magazine SUPER and the book club which covers 16 chapter books. The writing skills cover many different types including biographies, poetry and research projects.
Throughout each level there are informal and formal assessments to make sure each child is progressing and becoming a SUPERKID!

National Junior Honor Society
For six years, AmeriSchools Academy Camelback has held a chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). Membership into NJHS is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a middle school student. NJHS has worked hard to bring the accomplishments of outstanding students to the attention of parents, teachers, peers, and the community. The basis of selection into the society is based on its ideals of: scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. No student is simply inducted because of high academic achievement; NJHS strives to recognize the total student: one who excels in all areas.
Members in NJHS take part in different community service events: contributing their time a at St. Mary’s Food Bank, assisting at school functions, and participating in a variety of fundraisers. Members are motivated to make a difference at their school and community throughout the school year.
Current NJHS President, Isaiah Headd, believes NJHS has inspired him to help establish a school culture that instills high moral. He serves as a peer mentor to other students. He believes as president he can encourage and influence others to make choices that will help them be successful at school.

Meet Our AmeriSchools Staff!
It is the people who make up a school that make it a special place for children. We would like to introduce you to our instructional team and share something about each of them, as well as tell you a little about why they chose to be part of the AmeriSchools Academy-Camelback family.
Choose Your School and Choose Your Attitude!
What makes AmeriSchools staff and students world famous? The FISH! Philosophy emerged in 1998 and teaches some Be There
simple skills that help create a positive and energizing environment. What better place to learn? The staff at AmeriSchools follow these four simple practices:
- Play
- Make Their Day
- Choose Your Attitude
- Be There

SUPERKIDS NIGHT!
The parents of our lower elementary grades were introduced to the Superkids program during our first annual Superkids night on August 31. Teachers spent about 30 minutes with the parents to explain the program their child was experiencing in the classroom. Parents and students were then able to participate in some of the activities within the program.
CARNEGIE MATH NIGHT!
This marks our first year using the Middle School Series by Carnegie Learning. On November 3rd our teachers and students hosted our first Carnegie Math Night. This program is currently used in the 6th – 8th grades. During this event the students presented visual representations which are a part of their daily group collaboration in the classroom. Parents were able to also learn about the software portion of this program giving them clearer picture of what their child is doing weekly basis in Math class.
JUNIOR GOLF CLINIC!
On November 16, our students participated in a Junior Golf Clinic at the TPC Scottsdale. All students were enjoyed a performance from a “trick shot” artist and then were off to the putting green and the driving range for some instruction for PGA Professionals. A big thank you to the TPC Scottsdale for providing the transportation for our students!
HOLIDAY GET TOGETHER!
On December 16th our annual Holiday Get Together was presented by the lower elementary classes. Mrs. Peoples’ class recited a poem, “Five Little Snowmen”, Mrs. Pulley’s class presented the Christmas Letter Game, Mrs. Stokes’ class recited the “Let’s Be Happy”, and Mrs. Hernandez’ class presented a Reader’s Theatre of “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” by Dr. Seuss. Each class also sang holiday songs. The finale had the audience join in the fun with a rousing rendition of “The Twelve Days of Christmas”.
100TH DAY CELEBRATION!
Friday, January 20, 2012, in celebration of our 100th day of school, we will hold our annual “Wacky Wheels” day. This is a time where our students may bring their skateboards, scooters, and roller skates or rollerblades to have an afternoon of fun celebrating 100 days of getting smarter. (Students must wear helmets and elbow and knee pads are highly recommended).
AmeriSchools Bicycle Club
Every kid loves having a bicycle to ride, but until recently, nine AmeriSchools students didn’t have one. Getting a bicycle was the beginning of an educational experience for AmeriSchools Bike Club members. Superintendent Gary LeBlanc has been working for several months to prepare the students to appreciate the importance of leading an active lifestyle through bicycling and to understand important safety regulations.
AmeriSchools, through a tax donation, and with the help of the Arizona Bicycle Club provided participating youth, mostly middle school students, with jerseys, ABC Family Membership, helmets, socks, water bottles and bikes at no charge to the families. After months of planning, waiting, and being a bit frustrated by weather cancellations the AmeriSchools Bike Club had its first major event on April 25. Four of the nine club members attended the Great Bike Chase sponsored by Valley Metro. Superintendent LeBlanc said, “After a very busy week, we were able to obtain the bikes, get them refurbished, take a couple of training rides and participate at the Great Bike Chase. The kids rode 4.5 miles one way to the event, engaged in the Bike Rodeo, danced with Radio Disney, ate some bagels, had face paintings, received lots of free stuff and rode the 4.5 miles back. Oh yeah, we stopped at McDonald's for an ice cream as well and had one slow leak which folks at the bike rodeo fixed. Awesome!!!!”
Thank you, thank you to everyone who helped get this off the ground successfully..
